This guide walks through the complete process — from collecting stories to holding the finished book.

\n\n\n\n

In an age of digital everything, why print? Because physical books have qualities that digital files don't:

\n\n

Tangibility — There's something irreplaceable about holding a book of your grandmother's stories, turning the pages, seeing her photos alongside her words. Digital just isn't the same.
Discoverability — Books on shelves get noticed. A grandchild pulls it off the shelf on a rainy afternoon and discovers stories they never knew. A digital file buried in iCloud never has that moment.

\n\n

Step 1: Collect the Stories

\n\n

Every family history book starts with stories. The best approach depends on the storyteller:

\n\n

Voice Recording (Recommended)

For most families, recording spoken stories is the fastest, most natural, and richest way to collect content. Apps like Tell Me Your Story let the storyteller press one button and talk. Your stories are saved on your device and in iCloud. AI and book creation send selected text and photos to our service. Our service also stores book manuscripts and the original story text so you can edit your book.

\n\n

Aim for 20 to 40 stories of 5 to 15 minutes each. This typically produces a book of 100 to 200 pages — substantial enough to feel like a real book without being overwhelming.

\n\n

Written Contributions

Some family members prefer writing. They can type their stories in any format and import them into Tell Me Your Story, or you can collect them separately and include them when assembling the book.

\n\n

Interviews

Sitting down with a family member and asking questions is one of the most rewarding ways to collect stories. Record the conversation, transcribe it, and edit it into first-person stories. The back-and-forth of a real conversation often produces memories that wouldn't surface in solo recording.

\n\n

Step 2: Gather Photos

\n\n

Photos transform a family history book from good to treasured. Collect photos that match your stories:

\n\n

Childhood photos of the storyteller
Wedding and family photos
Photos of significant places — the family home, school, workplace
Photos of extended family and friends mentioned in stories
Historical photos that show what life looked like in a particular era

\n\n\n\n

Don't worry if you don't have photos for every story. The words are the heart of the book. Even a handful of well-chosen images make a significant difference.

\n\n

Step 3: Polish the Text

\n\n

Spoken stories are wonderful but usually need some tidying before print. Filler words, repetitions, and grammar quirks that sound fine in conversation can be distracting on the page.

\n\n

You have two paths:

\n\n

Manual editing — Read through each transcript and clean it up yourself. This works well if you enjoy editing and want full control.
AI-assisted polish — Tell Me Your Story's AI Story Polish gently tidies the text — removing \"um\"s, fixing grammar, smoothing run-on sentences — while preserving the storyteller's vocabulary, expressions, and unique voice. You see the original and polished versions side by side and choose which to keep for each story.

\n\n

The goal is readability, not literary perfection. The best family history books sound exactly like the person who told the stories — just cleaned up enough to read comfortably.

\n\n

Step 4: Organize into Chapters

\n\n

A natural structure for a family history book follows the arc of a life:

\n\n

Childhood & Origins — Where the family comes from, early memories, the world they grew up in
Growing Up — School years, formative experiences, coming-of-age moments
Love & Family — Meeting partners, starting families, raising children
Career & Livelihood — Work life, professional milestones, what they built
Adventures & Milestones — Travel, achievements, surprises, celebrations
Hard Times — Challenges faced and overcome, resilience, lessons from difficulty
Wisdom & Legacy — Reflections, advice for future generations, what matters most

\n\n

Tell Me Your Story uses this seven-chapter structure with curated prompts for each chapter. You can reorder stories, move them between chapters, and rename sections until the flow feels right.

\n\n

Step 5: Assemble the Book

\n\n

This is where individual stories become a cohesive book. A good family history book needs more than just stories placed in order — it needs connecting elements that give the reader context and flow.

\n\n

Tell Me Your Story's AI Book Editor generates:

\n\n

A foreword — Capturing the major themes and character of the storyteller's life
Chapter introductions — Brief passages that set the context for each life chapter
Transitions between stories — Smooth connections that guide the reader from one memory to the next
An afterword — A heartfelt closing that ties the memoir together

\n\n

You review and edit every AI-generated element. Nothing goes to print without your approval. Many families add a personal dedication page, a family tree, or a timeline of key dates.

\n\n

Step 6: Print

\n\n

Tell Me Your Story offers two printing options:

\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n

Additional copies can be ordered at per-book pricing — perfect for giving copies to siblings, children, and extended family.

\n\n

You can also export a free PDF for digital sharing. Some families print the PDF themselves at a local print shop for a more DIY approach.

\n\n

Alternative Approaches

\n\n\n\n

Self-publishing platforms (Blurb, Shutterfly, Apple Books)

You design and lay out the book yourself using their templates. This gives maximum creative control but requires significant time and design skills. Best for people who enjoy graphic design.

\n\n

Hiring a professional memoir writer

A ghostwriter interviews the family, writes the content, and manages the publishing process. Results can be excellent, but costs typically run $5,000 to $50,000+. Best for families who want a premium, professionally written result and have the budget.

\n\n

StoryWorth or similar services

These collect written responses over time and compile them into a book. The result is more of a Q&A compilation than a flowing narrative. Pricing is subscription-based ($99/year for StoryWorth).

\n\n

DIY with Word/Pages and a print shop

Type everything into a word processor, format it yourself, and bring it to a local print shop. Very affordable but very labor-intensive, and the results depend entirely on your formatting skills.

\n\n

Making It Special

\n\n

Small touches make a family history book truly special:

\n\n

Include multiple voices — Let different family members contribute their memories about the same events. A wedding day told from both the bride's and groom's perspective is twice as rich.
Add captions to photos — Don't just include photos — explain who's in them, when they were taken, and what the storyteller remembers about that moment.
Include recipes, maps, or family trees — These add context and make the book more engaging to browse.
Write a personal dedication — A few sentences from the person who organized the project, explaining why this book exists and who it's for.
